Abstract
In this thesis I argue that systematic theology and spirituality ought to form a hermeneutical spiral, and therefore mutually influence one another. In addition, I seek to contribute to the secondary scholarship on the person and spiritual writings of twentieth-century, Catholic, female mystic, Adrienne von Speyr. I view her life as seemingly paradoxical, inspired by her strong devotion to the Triune God. Through an examination of some of von Speyr' s insights into the systematic categories of Trinitarian and sacramental theology, I demonstrate how spiritual theology, and von Speyr in particular, enliven systematic theology by showing how systematic themes are inspired by the Divine-human encounter and how spiritual theology must remain moored to systematic theology in order that it may adequately reflect Christian doctrine.
