Abstract

“Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32). These words of Jesus to Simon reveal to us about Simon and his mission. Indeed, though Simon is weak and could be tempted, Jesus always prays for him so that he became a foundation of the Church: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (Mt 16:18). In this paper, I attempt to point out the mission of Peter and his successor, the pope, in the Catholic church and why the papacy is the matter with the catholic Church.
