Theology Day 2019: Fifty Years on the Family: A Look Back to the Present

Abstract
Over the past fifty years, familial life has evolved in response to the “signs of the time.” Changes within marriage and gender roles, as well as expectations regarding men and women’s relationship to work have moved the family unit into unchartered territory. This session aims to explore some of those changes by looking back on key statements made by the Church regarding family life (e.g., Gaudium et Spes, Familiaris Consortio by Pope John Paul II, and most recently Pope Francis’ Amoris Laetitia) in hopes of celebrating progress made and identifying areas in which certain challenges still remain.
Kari-Shane Davis Zimmerman is an Associate Professor of Theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at the College of the Holy Cross, her Masters at Duke University and then went on to receive her Ph.D. at Marquette University. Kari-Shane’s areas of research and teaching include Catholic Moral Theology and Christian Ethics, Sexual Ethics and Feminist Theology in addition to Catholic Social Teaching.
