Abstract

The biblical idea of “the image and likeness of God” is fundamental to Christian doctrine, since Christ is the revelation not only of the Word of God, but also of the Image of God. This doctrine is beautifully expressed in Icons depicting the mutual gestures of loving kindness between the Mother of God and the Christ Child. In the presence of actual icons, we will explore the ways in which Theology in line and color, in gestures and gazes, invites not only contemplation but participation in God’s closeness, vulnerability, and total involvement with us. The audience will be invited to cross the borders of these icons into a new and transfigured world in which the motherly tenderness of Mary is transformed into a merciful love and sorrow for the whole of creation.
