Abstract

The essay provides a comparative analysis of the (translated) Latin and Syriac versions of the story of Pelagia of Antioch, critiquing some scholarly readings of it through the use of narrative theory--specifically, that of the "frame story"--and selected aspects of the story's sociohistorical context. Contemporary materials on such themes as ''spectacle,'' "ornamentation,'' "representations of women," and ''friendship" inform it as well.
