Abstract

This paper presents and analyses Emmanuel Levinas' philosophy of the Face as it would pertain to, and be used to explicate, contextual Christologies by Michael Cook and Peter Phan so as to make Christ present to the cultures of Asia and Africa in ways that allow for Christ to emerge from the culture rather than being imposed on the culture. Such an explication effects the foundation for a Christology based in a face-to-face relationship with the person of Christ, and the paper also addresses what such a Christological view would envision.
