Abstract
Ember Days have historically been a common element within the liturgical tradition of the Roman Rite. While their origins are not completely known, they have served a number of liturgical purposes. Second Vatican Council and other authorities in the Church have affirmed the role of Ember Days, though they did not fully define their role or particular practice in the contemporary Church. Since then, Ember Days have fallen into disuse in many parts of the Church. However, by looking at the development of Ember Days over the centuries, as well as current practices, a renewed vision to their purpose is possible and can enrich the life of the Church as it seeks to meet the needs of the world while sanctifying it at the same time.
