Abstract
As we struggle to understand our own spiritual journeys, we look to our foremothers in the Bible as sources of inspiration and strength. We wonder about Junia, Prisca, Phoebe, Lydia: What did faith in Jesus Christ mean to them? By placing women at the theological center of this study, we hope to learn more about the practices and beliefs of the first century Christian women in light of the baptismal formula quoted in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for your are all one in Christ Jesus" (3:28).
