Abstract
Jamel Brinkley is the 2018 Sister Mariella Gable Award recipient for his debut short story collection, A Lucky Man, published by Graywolf Press and A Public Space Books. Ploughshares writes: “In A Lucky Man…the stories are not formally linked, and yet they are, implicitly, by their beautiful prose, by their intimate gaze at character, by their focus on black men, by their setting in New York City.” The deep ethical implications for identity, autonomy, and community represented in A Lucky Man speak to the values Sister Mariella Gable championed in authors such as Flannery O’Connor. Brinkley’s fiction has been published in The Best American Short Stories 2018, A Public Space, Ploughshares, American Short Fiction, and LitMag, and elsewhere.
