Abstract
As part of the community-engaged learning component of our Community Psychology course, our group partnered with the Benedictine Institute at CSB+SJU and St. Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud, Minnesota to explore the theme of radical hospitality. Across both sites, we examined how the Benedictine values including hospitality, respect for persons, listening, community living, and stability are lived out in everyday interactions. At the Benedictine Institute, we supported ‘Building Community’ events on Fridays that fostered connections among faculty and staff across roles and departments. We engaged in meaningful conversations with staff and monastic members about sustaining strong communities. At St. Scholastica, we provided companionship and emotional support to sisters in assisted living while learning firsthand about life in an intentional community. Through interviews, observation, and service, we explored how intentional relationships cultivate a psychological sense of community and demonstrate the real-world impact of radical hospitality across generations and contexts.
