Abstract
Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code captured the imagination of many with his story of “the other scriptures.” From time to time we hear news reports of new discoveries of ancient texts such as the Gospel of Judas. What are these other writings and what do they have to do with the formation of a canon of Scripture in the early Church? This presentation will explore the history and theology behind the selection and use of both the New Testament and Old Testament writings that came to be known as “Scripture” in the ancient Christian churches.
Charles Bobertz is professor of New Testament and Patristics at Saint John’s School of Theology·Seminary and the undergraduate Department of Theology of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. He received his B.A. from Saint John’s University in 1980 and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1988. He co-edited, with David Brakke, Readings in Christian Communities: Essays on Interpretation in the Early Church, published in 2002.
