Abstract
The focus of this study is the adoption by Cassian of Evagrius’ schema of “eight generic thoughts” for use in the formation of cenobites in Gaul. Cassian’s use of the schema is only one (though the most important) example of his integration of conceptual models derived from Evagrian monastic theology into his own program of monastic instruction. Cassian’s obvious reliance on Evagrian models should not obscure either his reinterpretation of the Evagrian material or his independent appropriation of the ascetic theology of Origen that had also inspired Evagrius.
