Abstract

An exegesis of Matthew 16:17-19 in which Jesus addresses Peter as the rock upon which he will build his church. The exposition includes a description of the author of Matthew and the Matthean community, the possible origins of the pericope, a discussion of the unique importance of Peter to the Matthean community, an analysis of significant words and phrases in the text, the history of the interpretation of the text, and current interpretive issues.
