Abstract

This paper examines the almost two centuries long and bitterly fought Chinese Rites Controversy. First, the paper describes the issues involved in the controversy. Second, the paper discusses the position of Mateo Ricci and his fellow Jesuits on the rites. Third, the paper presents the chronology of events in the controversy. Finally, the paper re-examines Chinese Rites in the Chinese context and offers some implications that they have for inculturation.
