Abstract

The popular Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood doesn’t like to see her work under the “science fiction” label. She thinks “speculative fiction” is a more apt descriptor for a series of novels that present a world of technical possibilities not very distant from our own. Reading her work through the philosophical lens of Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age gives us a cultural artifact suitable for multi-layered theological reflection. This lecture will explore themes related to the doctrines of creation and eschatology emerging from Atwood’s dystopian take on modern culture.
