Abstract
A Canadian married couple has been presented as possible candidates for beatification in the Roman Catholic Church—which raises some questions. Who and what is a saint? Do married people, living in ordinary circumstances, doing no heroic external deeds, become saints? In her presentation Mary Frances Coady introduced us to this remarkable couple— Georges and Pauline Vanier—who have had a profound impact on Canadian institutions, history, politics, and culture. The Vaniers are also the parents of Jean Vanier, founder of the global network of L'Arche communities. Mary Frances Coady is author of Georges and Pauline Vanier: Portrait of a Couple, and read from that biography during her talk.
