Abstract
The Ralph Gross Lectures focus on global topics and a broad range of interdisciplinary liberal arts issues.The lecture series was established at the request of the Gross family in honor of Ralph Gross, whose generosity and legacy still resonate here at St. John's.
A St. Cloud native and a 1965 St. John's University economics graduate, Ralph pursued advanced studies in business and accounting at the University of Minnesota.
He began his professional career as a CPA at Arthur Anderson Accounting, and then went on to become a comptroller, part owner, and finally president and CEO of SPS Companies in the Twin Cities.
Ralph's deep and abiding affection for St. John's was evident in his generosity toward his alma mater, including a substantial gift upon his passing in 2010 that helped establish the Ralph Gross Chair in Business and the Liberal Arts, the Ralph Gross First Generation Scholarship Fund, and the Ralph Gross Global Lecture.
Dr. Deardorff is a research fellow at Duke University and holds several faculty appointments at universities across the world She has twice been named a senior Fulbright specialist to South Africa and to Japan.
Dr. Deardorff is also the founding president of the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence and the Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators. She has also worked extensively with the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
A key focus of Dr. Deardorff's research and work centers around international education, global leadership, and intercultural learning and assessment. She has published extensively in this space, including serving as the editor of the SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence, as well as the editor of the SAGE Handbook of International Higher Education.
Recently, she has worked on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, project involving piloting an intercultural competence methodology called Story Circles.
