Abstract

This paper is an attempt to bring out the ideals of the Carthusian Order by examining the life of its founder (St. Bruno), his two surviving letters, life in the very first charterhouse, and most importantly the Carthusian customs (Consuetudines Cartusiae) as laid down by Guigo I who was the fifth Prior of Chartreuse.
