Abstract

This essay presents an exegetical and spiritual commentary on chapter 58 of Benedict's Rule, De Disciplina Suscipiendorum Fratrum. RB 58 is compared with earlier monastic texts, especially the Institutes of John Cassian and the Rule of the Master, in order to determine the gradual development of early monastic structures of formation. It is suggested that RB 58 represents the final stage of structural development of the previous informal process of monastic initiation.
