With One Breath

Jessica Solfest, College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

Description

This thesis focuses on the oscillatory dynamics and synchronization of cardiovascular and respiratory activity. The heart and respiratory rates are occasionally in synchrony, and I analyze the frequency of this synchrony to determine the existence of patterns. This research includes the use of applied dynamical systems, time series analysis, and Markov processes to unearth meaning behind cardiorespiratory communicative mysteries. Understanding the dynamics of these oscillations will increase general knowledge of cardiorespiratory communication.
