Abstract

The US Catholic Bishops spent the decade of the 1990's discussing how Ex Corde Ecclesiae should apply in this country. Over that period, the Bishops' conversations became increasing dominated by their perception that American Catholic higher education was slipping into the slough of secularism. Is the Bishops' blueprint for reasserting institutional "Catholic identity" compatible with the secular standards of educational excellence that have guided Catholic higher education for the past thirty years? Should the Bishops' 1999 Application Document be read as a call for a counter-reformation to reverse the incorporation of Catholic universities and colleges in the mainstream of American higher education? Will the envisioned "reformed Catholic college" have more in common with Bob Jones University or Saint Olaf College?
